The Rotary Dar Marathon took place on Tuesday and once again it hit a milestone after realising about Sh500 million meant to support education.

The funds raised, according to organisers, will be used to complete a world-class entrepreneurial resource centre at the University of Dar es Salaam under ‘Empowering Leaders through Education’ theme.

Organised by Rotary Clubs in Dar es Salaam in association with Bank M, the race attracted over 10,000 competitors from different parts of the world, thus making it the biggest marathon event in Tanzania.

World record holders and past champions highlighted the half marathon. The runners came from Kenya, Rwanda, Malawi, the Tanzanian military, Police and the elite up-country runners.

In this year’s edition, the men’s 21.1kilometre race winner was Dickson Marwa who clocked 1:02:41 hours followed by Ismail Juma (1:02:42) and Fabian Joseph (1:02:45). The trio are established athletes in half marathon.

The women’s half marathon top prize went to Natali Elisante (1:13:51) who was followed by Catherine Lanje (1:14:55) and Mukundanga Clementine (1:15:59). After the well-attended race, the fourth to the 10th athletes in half marathon, cycling, 9km and 5km races took home some special prizes.

The top three winners of the half marathon in both categories take their prizes at an exclusive Rotary Dar Marathon awards ceremony planned for tonight at the Hyatt Regency, The Kilimanjaro Hotel.

Bank M deputy chief executive officer Jacqueline Woiso said she was proud of her bank’s involvement in supporting community-based projects and that has achieved great through working closely with the marathon organisers since the introduction of the race in 2009.

Other sponsors who made the event possible were SBC Tanzania Ltd, National Bank of Commerce, Spice Net Ltd, British Gas Tanzania Ltd, Alaf Ltd, Toyota (T) Ltd and Azam, to mention but a few. Rotary Dar Marathon chairperson Vikash Shah thanked the sponsors for supporting their endeavours.
