Kenyatta to change anti-doping system

Image
Uhuru Kenyatta / President of Kenya Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta has vowed to ensure the country makes the necessary changes to its anti-doping system ahead of an extended deadline of 2 May to avoid providing an “excuse” for them to be suspended from this year’s Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Kenya missed an initial deadline of 5 April to introduce a new Bill into Parliament, something that was not passed in time due partly to a Parliamentary recess. A fresh time limit was imposed by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) following discussion on Kenya during an Independent Compliance Review Committee meeting in Montreal. If improvements are not made by then, a recommendation of non-compliance will be made ahead of a WADA Foundation Board meeting on 12 May. “By next week latest, the Anti-Doping Bill will have been passed by Parliament and I will have signed it into law – so that there will be no excuse to deny our team from participatio...

IAAF rejects former Kenya chief Mwangi’s ban appeal

Image
Isaac Kamande Mwangi The IAAF’s Ethics Committee has rejected former Athletics Kenya (AK) chief executive Isaac Kamande Mwangi’s appeal against his provisional six-month ban for violating anti-doping controls. The punishment was handed out by the International Association of Athletics Federations, the sport’s governing body, in February after Mwangi was accused of seeking bribes to reduce the doping bans of two athletes. His provisional suspension came after former AK president Isaiah Kiplagat, ex-deputy David Okeyo and former treasurer Joseph Kinyua were banned by the Ethics Committee on charges of mis-using funds from a sponsorship by U.S. sports manufacturer Nike. All the officials deny any wrong-doing. Joy Sakari and Francisca Koki Manunga said Mwangi asked each of them for $24,000 to reduce four-year bans. Sharad Rao, Kenya’s barrister appointed by the IAAF , said on Friday that he would complete his probe into the affair by mid-May. ...
