IOC pushes back against Paris mayor on banning Russian, Belarusian athletes from 2024 Olympics

Image
The International Olympic Committee pushed back against the mayor of Paris on Wednesday, insisting there were no plans for "a Russian or Belarusian delegation” at the 2024 Games while also acknowledging that some athletes from those countries could be welcomed. The IOC statement came a day after Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo said no Russians or Belarusians should be allowed to compete at next year's Olympics because of their involvement in the war in Ukraine. Olympic leaders have set out a path for athletes from Russia and Belarus who have not actively supported the war to try to qualify and compete as “neutral athletes” without a national identity such as team uniforms, flags and anthems. “It is not possible to parade as if nothing had happened, to have a delegation that comes to Paris while the bombs continue to rain down on Ukraine,” Hidalgo said Tuesday. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, along with many sports leaders and athletes, have consistently said all potent

IOC ratifies Russia-Belarus sanctions after Paris 2024 concerns

Image
Amid outcry over the potential inclusion of Russian and Belarusian athletes at Paris 2024, the IOC has reiterated its stance on sanctions. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has reiterated it will stand by the sanctions imposed against Russia and Belarus after appearing to open the door for their inclusion at the Paris 2024 Games. The two nations are currently banned from Olympic competition following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine last year. But IOC statements last month appeared to clear a pathway for the inclusion of athletes from both countries to compete under a neutral flag. Now, however, the governing body has sought to clarify its position - in particular as a response to recent comments made by Stanislav Pozdnyakov, head of Russia’s Olympic Committee. Pozdnyakov told Russia’s state news agency TASS, “Russians must participate on the same conditions as athletes from other countries. We do not welcome additional conditions and criteria, especially those that inclu

Chepngetich dazzles at Kenyan Cross Country Championships

Ruth Chepngetich, the 2019 world marathon champion, produced two amazing runs at the Kenyan Cross Country Championships – a World Athletics Cross Country Tour Bronze event – to win a pair of titles within an hour at the Kenya Prisons Training College in Ruiru. Racing at the venue that was probably her training ground during her time in the Kenya Prisons Service, Chepngetich dominated the senior women’s 10km event, then anchored her team to victory in the mixed relay. Kenya held its trial event for the World Athletics Cross Country Championships Bathurst 23 in December, but today’s event will be used to select national runners for the Sirikwa Classic – a World Cross Country Tour Gold meeting – in Eldoret on 4 February. Within the first kilometre, Chepngetich – who led the world marathon list last year with 2:14:18, the second-fastest run in history – had stretched the senior women’s field to single file. By half way, her lead had grown to about 150 metres. She continued to lead, bu
