KAULI YA NYAMBUI NI KIPIMO TOSHA CHA UDHAIFU WA UZALENDO WETU

Image

Nafasi ya tano i

Mile Moment of the Month: The Mile of the Century – Bannister vs. Landy 1954

Image
Sixty years ago, on August 7, at the 1954 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Vancouver, Canada, the world’s two best Milers, England’s Roger Bannister , the first man to run a sub-4 minute Mile, and Australia’s John Landy , the second man to break 4 minutes and at the time the world record holder, waged a titanic battle over the storied distance. A packed Empire Stadium of more than 30,000 spectators, plus an international television audience of 10 million, collectively witnessed what was dubbed “The Mile of the Century” or “Miracle Mile”. The match-up did not disappoint as Landy, 24, took out the pace, aiming not only to win, but also to break his own world record ( 3:58.0). Bannister, 25, sat behind the front running Landy, and off of the final turn, Bannister, a 1952 Olympian, surged past his tiring rival, who looked over his left shoulder as Bannister went by on his right. The Brit broke the beam in 3:58.8 followed by the Aussie in 3:59.6. In a truly epic race,

Unprofessional Circumstances Tragedy to Tanzania Sports

Image
TANZANIA had a week to forget in sports after seeing their teams, both Taifa Stars and 'Serengeti Boys', dismissed out of the African championship qualifiers. Taifa Stars were disbanded by Mozambique on 4-3 aggregate in the second round of the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, while their young brothers 'Serengeti Boys' were humiliated 4-0 aggregate by South Africa's Amajimbos in the U-17 Africa championship qualifiers. However, the misery of all was compounded by 'Team Tanzania' that could not even go closer to medal chart at the just concluded Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland. This is the second time in succession that the country has failed to win anything in the Games. In 2010 New Delhi event, Tanzania also fired blanks. Following poor performance of 'Team Tanzania' in the Glasgow Games, some quarters raised concerns urging the government to consider putting the country's participation in top internati

Will Rio be ready for the 2016 Olympics?

Image
Official LOGO for 2016 Rio De Janeiro Olympic Games Brazil just hosted the biggest sporting event in its history, a largely successful World Cup following a lead-up of fears over protests, delayed construction and transportation madness. The first Olympics in South America, which will open in Rio de Janeiro two years from today, pose an even greater challenge. Nearly 11,000 athletes (14 times as many as the World Cup) from more than 200 countries compete in 28 sports crammed into 16 days of medal competition (half the length of the World Cup). That scale and complexity also carries an estimated $20 billion price tag, several billion more than spent on the World Cup. The weight falls on not the entire country, but mostly on a city nicknamed Cidade Maravilhosa . Will the Marvelous City be ready? International Olympic Committee officials gained reassurance from the World Cup.   “We are very happy that many of the concerns which were mentioned before this World Cup

Team Tanzania Returns Home From Glasgow

THE first batch of Tanzania athletes, who took part in the just concluded Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, is expected to jet down at Julius Nyerere International Airport on Tuesday. Tanzania, despite fielding the biggest number of athletes compared to previous editions of the Club Games, failed to grasp a single medal from the event.   Team Tanzania Manager Muharami Mchume said the athletes will return in two batches after they failed to get a flight that would accommodate all 36 athletes and their officials. Mchume will lead the first batch that is expected to touch down this afternoon aboard Emirates flight. They left Glasgow on Monday for Newcastle on bus before boarding a flight to Dubai, where they spent the night and are set to proceed to Dar es Salaam Tuesday morning. The second batch to be led by the Director of Sports in the Ministry for Information, Youth, Culture and Sports, Leonard Thadeo, is scheduled to jet in on Wednesday. Tanzania bit the d

Glasgow: Usain Bolt Plans to Retire in 2017

Image
GLASGOW, Aug 2 (Reuters) – Six-times Olympic champion Usain Bolt has repeated his intention to continue competing until the world championships in 2017 after winning relay gold at the Commonwealth Games on Saturday. The world’s fastest man had planned to retire after the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games but has reiterated comments made in September that he could delay those plans for another year. “I’ve always said that after Rio I wanted to retire but they keep saying I should go on till 2017, so I think I might just do that and that will be my last championships,” Bolt said. He was speaking to reporters after anchoring Jamaica to gold in the 4×100 metres relay, his first Commonwealth Games medal. “This training thing is not so easy so I’m just so happy I’ve been able to do what I wanted in this sport,” he added.  The 27-year-old Bolt is an eight-time world champion and holds the 100 and 200 metres world records. He believes the worlds in London, where he

DENIS MALLE: Mtaka na Nyambui mnasubiri nini?

Image
