KATIBU Mkuu wa Shirikisho la Riadha Tanzania (RT), Suleiman Nyambui, ameitaka Kamati ya Olimpiki Tanzania (TOC), kuifuta Tanzania kushiriki mashindano ya kimataifa hadi itakapokuwa imefanya maandalizi ya kutosha. Kauli hiyo ya Nyambui imekuja wakati akitoa maoni yake juu ya ushiriki wa Tanzania katika mashindano ya Jumuiya ya Madola yatakayofanyika Glasgow, Scotland baadae mwaka huu. Akizungumza na Tanzania Daima jijini Dar es Salaam jana, Nyambui alisema kama nchi inataka kupata mafanikio katika mashindano hayo inapaswa kujipanga kuanzia ngazi ya vijana kwani ndiyo msingi wa mafanikio ya michezo yote. Alisema kinachoiponza Tanzania ni maandalizi. “Mbona zamani walifanya vizuri kwa nini sasa hivi washindwe,” alisena na kuongeza kwamba Tanzania ya sasa si kama ile ya zamani wakati wao wanaiwakilisha nchi katika mashindano mbalimbali. “Siku zote shule ndiyo zinaibua vipaji, kama zikiwa nzuri hata timu za taifa zitakuwa nzuri pia,” alisema Nyambui ambaye pia ni mjumbe

“At independence Tanzania had 350,000 elephants… in 1987 there were only 55,000 elephants left.” That’s the dire message from the president of Tanzania, who spoke to CNN’s Christiane Amanpour about his country’s battle against wildlife poaching. President Jakaya Kikwete joined Amanpour in London, where heads of state are meeting to find a solution to end poaching before it’s too late. “This is madness now, it is just impossible… it’s a serious matter.” Incidents of poaching are on the rise fueled by a growing demand for ivory and rhino horn in Asia. There are also concerns that poaching is helping to fund violent groups in the region. In recent years, Tanzania has witnessed a steep rise in poaching and other forms of crime targeting elephants and other wild animal species. The rate of killings is significantly greater than the elephants’ capacity to reproduce. This has led many wildlife experts to declare the situation as a crisis, worse than the mass slaughter in the 1970s and 1980s, which led to the global ivory trade ban by the Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) in 1989. Currently, the selling of ivory is done only with the approval of CITES; moreover, raw ivory sales are expected to resume after the expiry of a nine year moratorium in 2017. The CITES approved ivory auction which was held in 2008, saw ivory selling at least US$1,700 per kg. Government authorities and various international and local non-government organisations (NGOs) are working together to campaign against poaching in an effort to eliminate the ugly menace but they have failed
