Akhwari raps AT for lousy Games preps

Image
John Stephen Akhwari Athletics legend John Stephen Akhwari has declared that Tanzania is not in a position to get a medal in the on going Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.   Akhwari, who hails from Manyara, has been a symbol for the Olympic Movement after he hit the headlines in the Mexico City Games in 1968 after suffering injury and hobbled with pain, finishing last in the marathon, well after most people had left the stadium but a few spectators and some cameramen.   Akhwari said in an interview at his Manyara home that none of the athletes is in a position to win a medal as the athletes representing the country at the Glasgow Games were not drilled enough by Athletes Tanzania (AT) for the competition.   He said that for an athlete to get a medal in major competitions such as the Olympics and Commonwealth Games, such athlete has to be prepared thoroughly from grassroots to upper levels.    “It’s surprising that AT stage

Dwayne Johnson Steps Out with Girlfriend at 'Hercules' Premiere

Dwayne Johnson AKA The Rock Actor and ex-pro wrestler Dwayne Johnson knows a thing or two about making a splashy entrance. And he certainly didn’t disappoint when he showed up at last night’s Los Angeles premiere of 'Hercules ,' which took place at the TLC Chinese Theater in Hollywood.  Though the event featured several big-name guests — including Mariah Carey, Eddie Murphy and girlfriend Paige Butcher, and Kylie Minogue — all eyes were on the 42-year old Johnson as he stepped out on the red carpet with his girlfriend, Lauren Hashian.  The two have been dating for several years, reportedly after the then-married actor met the Massachusetts native while filming his 2007 sports-comedy 'The Game Plan.' That relationship, some speculate, led to Johnson’s 2008 divorce from wife Dany Garcia, with whom Johnson has a 12-year-old daughter, Simone. That divorce,  Johnson told 'The Hollywood Reporter' earlier this year; sent the actor into a deep depressio

Wales secured their first medal of the Commonwealth Games with silver in the rhythmic gymnastics team all-around final.  The Welsh team of Frankie Jones, Laura Halford and Nikara Jenkins led for much of the competition but Canada secured gold.  The silver medal means Jones is the most successful Welsh gymnast in Commonwealth Games history. Jazz Carlin finished sixth in the final of the 200m freestyle.  Carlin clocked a personal best in a race in which Australian Emma McKeon won gold with Siobhan-Marie O'Connor of England securing a silver medal and Australia's Bronte Barratt in third.  Carlin had finished second in her heat earlier in the day and the fourth fastest qualifier, setting a new personal best of 1:57:61.  The 23-year-old, a silver and bronze medallist in Delhi four years ago, also competes in the 400m and 800m freestyle,  Despite a strong start, Rob Holderness was seventh in a 200m breaststroke final won by Scotland's Ross Murdoc

Photograph: Adam Davy/PA Mo Farah has withdrawn from the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow owing to illness, and will focus instead on recovering for the European Championships in Zurich. The news is a major blow to the Games, coming the morning after they launched the event with a spectacular opening ceremony at Celtic Park. Team England said Farah, 31, would remain at his training base in Font Romeu, rather than travel to Glasgow where he was due to compete in the 5,000m and 10,000m. Farah had pulled out of his last two races – the Sainsbury’s Glasgow Grand Prix at Hampden Park and last Sunday’s Anniversary Games in London – after being admitted to hospital in the US with abdominal pains. Farah said: “I have taken the tough decision to withdraw from the Commonwealth Games. The sickness I had two weeks ago was a big setback for me. Training is getting better here in Font Romeu but I need another few week

Ahmedi Saidi Magogo apata pigo mapema Ahmedi Saidi Magogo of Tanzania has been disqualified from the men's -60kg class at the Commonwealth Games after coming in overweight for the event. The Tanzanian was the only member of a 16-man list to fail to make the weight, with officials weighing him at 62.7kg when the judokas reported for registration. Magogo was nearly unable to attend the Games due to issues with his visa, but he was finally cleared to travel to Scotland with the rest of the squad. However, Magogo has now been ruled out, which leaves Massoud Kombo and Gervas Chilipweli as the only Tanzanian judokas competing at Glasgow. SOURCE: sportsmole.co.uk

Commonwealth Games 2014: What is the organisation, and what does it do?

Image
The group of nations was formed officially in 1949 Thousands of the world’s top athletes began arriving in Glasgow on Monday, ahead of the start of the 20th Commonwealth Games. Dubbed the ‘friendly games’, more than 4,500 sports men and women will compete in events across 17 sports from 24 July to 3 August. Before Wednesday’s ceremony which will kick off the event, we answer what the Commonwealth is, and what it does.  What is the Commonwealth? The Commonwealth is a voluntary intergovernmental association of 53 member states, almost all of which were formerly ruled by Britain - directly or indirectly. Therefore, the group encompasses nations from Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, the Mediterranean and the Pacific. The states involved agree to share a common set of values and ideals, and acknowledge a shared history and traditional trade links. What is its history? Commonwealth Games will be a gold-plate triumph

Mo Farah is running 5000m & 10000m A friend in Glasgow warns of no entry signs multiplying like bacteria in clammy petri dishes, and says that the Evening Times’ list of roads to avoid has become essential reading. Another tells of numerous patches of empty seats and spirit-squeezing queues for last week’s grand prix athletics at Hampden Park, a test event for the Commonwealth Games. Then there are the absent sporting galácticos . The suspected norovirus at the athletes’ village . And the other vague concerns, most of which will be blasted into irrelevance once the pyrotechnics and sing-along choruses of Wednesday’s opening ceremony get into full swing. Let me make a prediction. The Commonwealth Games will be an enormous success. It will be almost unavoidable, unrelenting euphoria, and – if it can repeat the vibe of Manchester 2002 – quite a lot of fun. The scale and ambition of the BBC’s coverage, and the huge number of medals that will be won by British athl
