ARCHIVES: It was arguably the greatest last place finish in Olympic Games history

Image
John Stephen Akhwari Tanzanian marathon runner John Stephen Akhwari was never going to won a medal at Mexico City in 1968 . But his journey to the finish line is probably better remembered than that of the winner, Mamo Wolde of Ethiopia .  Less than halfway into the 42km race, Akhwari tangled with another runner and took a horrific fall, smashing his knee and shoulder on the pavement. With his knee reportedly dislocated and heavily bleeding, his race should have ended there. But instead it became one of the great tales of sporting courage, bravely, he continued running. As his rivals crossed the line one by one, Akhwari remained out on the course, in pain, but determined to see out the race, he did just that. By the time he completed the race - at about 7pm Mexico time - he was more than an hour behind any of the other 57 competitors to have entered the Olympic stadium. But the few thousand people who stayed behind to see him complete the race gave him an almigh

Iraqw people dancing as they thank god during the harvest season The Iraqw tribe is one of the few non- Bantu tribes in Tanzania . They are Cushitic of Ethiopian origin - and their appearance is distinctive: they tend to be tall and light-skinned, with the prominent cheekbones and high foreheads common to people of Cushitic extraction. However, it is uncertain when they migrated to northern Tanzania . Estimates vary between 1000 and 5000 years ago. The Iraqw maintain their strong agriculturalist roots of farming wheat, beans, sorghum and maize covering parts of two main regions of Arusha and Manyara . Story to be continued...

Thanksgiving Day: What does it mean?

Image
The Turkey To many Americans Thanksgiving Day means sumptuous turkey dinners, family reunions and football games. Most seem to forget that the very name of this traditional holiday means to give thanks. But give thanks to whom? For what? And why? IN   1630   the  little   350-ton  Arbella was plowing westward through the rough Atlantic to the Massachusetts coast.   From  its   deck  John Winthrop preached a striking sermon that accurately predicted America's future. "Wee shall be," prophesied Winthrop, "as a Citty upon a Hill, the Eies of all people are uppon us; soe that if wee shall deale falsely with our god in this worke we have undertaken and soe cause him to withdrawe his present help from us, wee shall be made a story and a by-word through the world." Those are remarkable words! They indicate that at least some of the early colonists sensed that their endeavors were being favored by the hand of God. These early settlers seemed to grasp that t

SOKOINE MARATHON 2014: Monduli DC will be the Master of Ceremony NOT the Athletics Tanzania

Image
The late Edward Moringe Sokoine 12 th of April 1984 Tanzania lost the true leader, the late Prime Minister Edward Moringe Sokoine following the road accident approximately 40 kilometers from Mororogoro towards the capital Dodoma . It was one of the saddest dates for Tanzania since Independence Day of 1961.  However the date above does not represent any 'memorable marathon day' at all, that is why Athletics Tanzania’s involvement is inadequate despite association’s having no credible constitution. This time the organizing committee will involve top government officials as we celebrate 30 th anniversary since the late Edward Moringe Sokoine died. Invitation: Everyone from every part of the country will be welcomed to celebrate the 'life' of the legend NOT his death as it may be understood. The fun Mini Marathon run will be accompanied by traditional dances, Morani and School kids chasing the Roosters, Spear throws, Long and High jump al

Sebastian Coe’s going for gold again – £2 million to be precise

Sir Sebastian Coe Lord Coe, the mastermind of the 2012 Olympic Games, launches his own charity to help fund the building of a medical research centre. He was inspired by his mother’s struggle against a fatal disease  Sebastian Coe wears his hard hat at a jaunty angle. He seems relaxed, as befits the man who masterminded the London Olympic Games . Compared with years of tours with builders he undertook as the 560-acre Olympic Park took shape, a look around a rather more modest project, covering only three-and-a-half acres, can hardly be taxing.  Yet he takes charge within minutes of arriving at the building on Euston Road, just along from the British Library in north London. When it is finished in 2015, it will house the Francis Crick Institute, Europe’s largest centre for biomedical research, where scientists will tackle Britain’s four biggest killers: cancer, neuro-degenerative illnesses, cardiovascular conditions and infectious diseases.  “I’m going to criticise
