ATHLETICS: Kiplagat buries Kiprop dream

Silas Kiplagat produced the shock of the IAAF Diamond League meeting in Monaco as he out sprinted domestic arch-rival, the Beijing Olympics and two-time world champion compatriot Asbel Kiprop, who was chasing the world record, with a blistering 3:27.64 world leading personal best on Friday night. On the night, Kiplagat’s thrilling performance made him the fourth fastest man in history that was also a Diamond League record, trimming 0.08 off the time Kiprop set in winning here last year. For the two-time world champion, who finished in a season’s best of 3:28.45, it was a huge anti-climax after he had prepared for an attempt on Hicham El Guerrouj’s 16-year-old world record of 3:26.00 by setting the fastest 800m time of the year, 1:43.34, at the Diamond League meeting in Paris earlier this month. “At 1200m I knew the race was too slow,” Kiprop told the IAAF website. “We went through in 2.47 and I had asked for 2.45. In the home straight, I could see the others behind me on th

Germany is World Cup champion 2014

Germany claimed their fourth World Cup win defeating Argentina 1-0 in the 2014 final at the Maracana in Brazil on Sunday. Argentina defied the Germans for 90 minutes regulation time and into the second half of extra time. But with seven minutes left before penalty kicks Mario Goetze slipped behind the Argentina defence to smash into the far corner. Centuries ago Spain and Portugal conquered South America leaving their language behind. Now it’s the turn of the Germans and they are leaving with the World Cup. The Germans demolished the hosts Brazil 7-1 in the semi final before returning to take a hard fought final. Germany enjoyed the majority of possession in the first half and came close to scoring in the dying moments but the score ended 0—0 as the teams battled for supremacy. In an evenly contested affair both teams had their moments. In the fourth minute Argentina’s Gonzalo Higuain sent a chance wide to the relief of the Germans.  The Argentines also hit

Tanzania Athletes Flop in Dar

SOME athletes who will represent the country at the forthcoming 20th Commonwealth Games have proved a failure in the two-day National Athletics Championship which ended at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam. In men's 10,000 and 5,000 meters, Dickson Marwa of Mara and Joseph Theophil dominated the two races and scooped the top positions. Marwa was in the list of athletes earmarked to go to Ethiopia to prepare for the Commonwealth Games set for July 23 to August 3 in Glasgow, Scotland but his name was removed because he was regarded to be old. In 10,000-meters race on Saturday, Marwa won the 10,000m after clocking 28:30.82 while Fabian Nelson and Wilbeard Peter who had camped in China finished fifth and seventh in 28:59.96 and 29:49.35 respectively. Marwa also excelled in 5,000m, winning the race in 13:38.61 followed by Nelson in 13:39:58 while Peter was ninth in 14:05:59. Theophil, who was second in 10,000 meters, finished third in 5000m.
