Thomas Bach has hired a German marketing and communications expert as an executive assistant, one of his first appointments since he was elected IOC president last month.

The International Olympic Committee says Jochen Faerber will begin work Dec. 1 as Bach’s “head of executive office.”

Faerber is the managing director of Germany’s Olympic fencing training center and head of the center’s marketing arm. Bach won a team gold medal in fencing for Germany in 1976.

Faerber helped organize more than 20 fencing world championships and was head of broadcasting at the international fencing federation. He also ran his own public relations agency and communications for Munich’s unsuccessful bid for the 2018 Winter Games.
