Monduli residents are expected to mark the 30th anniversary since the death of Tanzanian Prime Minister Edward Moringe Sokoine through staging sports and entertainment activities on April 12.

The event’s organiser Wilhelm Gidabuday
disclosed in Dar es Salaam yesterday that several activities such as athletics, traditional games and dances will be staged to commemorate the day.

Of the activities include javelin, mini marathon of 15 kilometres as well as a two kilometers race for seniors and juniors.

This is the second time in a row that sporting activities are being held on the day in memory of Sokoine.

Gidabuday said last year the Minister for Information, Youth, Sports and Culture Dr Fenella Mukangara was the guest of honor at the event that attracted more than 600 sportsmen and women before a capacity of 5000 spectators.

The member said the sporting activities are held mainly to entertain people and also to give a platform to young and unheralded athletes to expose their talents.
He also said plans are underway to invite President Jakaya Kikwete to be the guest of honor at the event.

“This year’s memorial activities will include sporting events like athletics, javelin, long and short jumps and also the Masai people will perform some of their traditional dances ”, he said.

He declined to unveil prize package details but said over 70m/ has been set aside to cater for the event’s winners.
Sokoine born in 1938 in Monduli died in a road accident on 12 April 1984 at Dumila in Morogoro.
