Glasgow: Kenyans out to dominate the marathon today

African duo of Stephen Chemlany (KEN) and John Ekiru Kelai (KEN) are
aiming for a one-two finish when the Men's Marathon opens the
Athletics action at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games today.

However, they will be pushed hard by Michael Shelley (AUS) over the
city centre course that begins at the Glasgow Green Precinct.

Kenya will be out to lay down an early marker in the Glasgow 2014
Commonwealth Games athletics medal table with athletes from the east
African country seeking medals in three of the four finals that will
take on place on Sunday, the first day of athletics.

The women's marathon features more African ambition with which
Chemlany and Kelai's compatriots Caroline Kilel (KEN) and Philes
Ongori (KEN) are the leading competitors.

Hampden Park hosts the next Athletics event of the day, with the
women's T37/38 long jump starting things off.

Australia's Jodi Elkington holds the season's best jump of 4.22m and
will aim to continue that form to become the first athlete to win a
Gold medal at Hampden.

She will be pushed hard for that honour by Juanelie Meijer (RSA) and
Ella Azura Pardy (AUS) who have both jumped in excess of 4m in 2014.

The men's 5000m final ends the first day's programme when the Delhi
2010 champion Moses Kipsoro (UGA) sets out to defend his title. Isiah
Kiplangat Koech (KEN) will push him hard and aim to improve on the
bronze medal that he won at the 2013 world championships.

Elsewhere on the programme, the men's and women's 100m heats begin,
when Richard Thompson (TTO) and Kerron Stewart (JAM) set out on their
quest to become the fastest athletes in the Commonwealth.

Christine Ohuruogu (ENG) and Amantle Montsho (BOT) will renew their
rivalry in the women's 400m heats. In 2013 Ohuruogu won her second
world title when she pipped Montsho to the line at the world
championships in Moscow.

In the field the men's shot put and women's hammer begin their
qualifying rounds.
