Team Tanzania Returns Home From Glasgow

THE first batch of Tanzania athletes, who took part in the just concluded Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, is expected to jet down at Julius Nyerere International Airport on Tuesday.

Tanzania, despite fielding the biggest number of athletes compared to previous editions of the Club Games, failed to grasp a single medal from the event.

Team Tanzania Manager Muharami Mchume said the athletes will return in two batches after they failed to get a flight that would accommodate all 36 athletes and their officials. Mchume will lead the first batch that is expected to touch down this afternoon aboard Emirates flight.

They left Glasgow on Monday for Newcastle on bus before boarding a flight to Dubai, where they spent the night and are set to proceed to Dar es Salaam Tuesday morning.

The second batch to be led by the Director of Sports in the Ministry for Information, Youth, Culture and Sports, Leonard Thadeo, is scheduled to jet in on Wednesday.

Tanzania bit the dust in the 2014 Commonwealth Games that drew to a close on Sunday without a single athlete managing to secure a medal for the country.

It is the second consecutive edition of the Commonwealth Games that Team Tanzania misses out on medals after yet another dismal performance by its athletes.

Four years ago, Tanzania athletes put in a poor show at the Club Games held in New Delhi, India as they ended the Games without a single medal. Given the kind of preparations they went through this time around through the massive assistance of the government, some expected a better performance from Team Tanzania.

The government threw its weight behind Team Tanzania when it paid for the athletes' training in China, Turkey, New Zealand and Ethiopia.

Team Tanzania competed in six sports, namely boxing, athletics, cycling, judo, table tennis and swimming, featuring a total of 36 athletes.

Meanwhile, Glasgow's Commonwealth Games were hailed "the best ever" in a night that celebrated the city and her people. Aussie star Kylie Minogue provided some pop gold as thousands gathered to watch the lowering of the Commonwealth Games Federation flag, signalling the close of the 11-day sporting spectacular.

Fireworks lit up the sky over Hampden Park as the flag was passed to the next hosts, City of Gold Coast, Australia. HRH Prince Imran, President of the Commonwealth Games Federation, praised the success of the event.

Dressed in a showgirlthemed outfit Kylie performed a blistering set starting with hit Spinning Around, even getting Prime Minister David Cameron up on his feet in the royal box.

Barely able to complete his speech for applause and cheers, he said: "Scotland, you have made the best Games ever. Glasgow, you were pure, dead brilliant." The Games President also announced the partnership with Unicef has raised more than £5million for children of the Commonwealth.

Sunday night's closing ceremony was themed as a music festival, bringing a mini T in the Park-style event to Scotland's national football stadium, which played such a key role in the Games.
