Tanzania
tennis prodigy Omar Sulle has won a one year International Tennis
Federation’s scholarship tenable at Confederation of African Tennis (ITF
/CAT) center based in Casablanca, the Tanzania Tennis Association (TTA)
president Fina Mango confirmed yesterday.
Mango said Sulle becomes the first Tanzanian to won a scholarship
at the newly opened center. She described this as the biggest
development to the young player who has been based at ITF /CAT East
Africa center in Bujumbura for three years.
She said recent performances by the 14-year old player have prompted ITF/CAT to offer him the valuable scholarship.
Mango said Sulle will leave the country mid next month as he is expected to be in Casablanca on August 18.
‘Sulle is one of the greatest young Tanzania tennis players, he is
very good, disciplined and talented, this is the greatest opportunity
for him to learn more things, as the association we are very proud of
him and we wish him a very successful stay at the center,’ she said.
She said the scholarship is subject to renewal depending on the players’ performance on and off the campus.
Mango said although the scholarship is paid by ITF /CAT her
association is required to contribute a certain amount for the player
upkeep at the center.
She said ITF /CAT have communicated to TTA that in 2015 the
players’ scholarships will be jointly funded by the ITF and Olympic
Solidarity.
‘Whilst the scholarship covers most items including food,
accommodation and training, an annual contribution of $2,500 paid by the
federation will be used towards the cost of additional items relating
to the players’ stay not included in the scholarship,’ she said.
Meanwhile, Mango disclosed that Sulle will be accompanied by
another Tanzanian top junior tennis player Tumaini Martin who will
undergo a one month trails at the center.
Martin is currently in South Africa where ITF /CAT sponsored him to
compete at the ongoing Southern Africa Under 14 and 18 tournaments.
‘I have just returned from the United Kingdom (UK) where on top of
my personal errands I met with ITF/CAT officials and managed to convince
them on the performance of Tumaini Martin and they accepted to have him
at the Casablanca center for one month trials, if he will impress them,
they will take him on board,’ she said.
Sulle is a top East Africa tennis junior player, he has won many
titles, recently was crowned Under-14 boys' champion at the ITF /CAT
East African Junior Open in Kigali.
