Mayor joins fray in City Marathon
Mwanza City Mayor Stanslaus Mabula |
The mayor opted for a five-kilometres race while inaugurating the
registration process in Mwanza yesterday, where he said he will showcase
his skills and ability in athletics during the D-Day.
He also urged other athletes from all over the country to turn out
in the fast growing event that not only promotes youths’ talents, but
also opens doors to many opportunities for the Lake Zone region.
‘We want to use this tournament to revive athletics in our town and
have a ripple effect countrywide. Athletics should go back to its noble
position as it was in 1970’s during the era of (Selemani) Nyambui and
Filbert Bayi; therefore I strongly urge athletes from all regions to
participate because it will help them and as we say sports is no longer
an entertainment but employment since the winners are getting prizes,
‘he said.
He said the host region will make sure that all necessary
preparations to their athletes will be done so that they win the top
three positions and that after five years of the event, it is time for
Mwanza region participants to ‘rock’ the Rock City.
The mayor applauded sponsors of this year’s event for their support.
Speaking during the event, the Mwanza Regional Athletics
Association vice- chairman, Charles Kimune, said the open race will
involve various age groups and people with albinism.
‘We will have 21 kilometres as the main open race which will
involve athletes from all over the country and foreigners, five
kilometres for people with albinism and cooperate runners, three
kilometres for elders aged over 55 years and two Kilometers for children
between 7-12 years,’ he said.
‘Despite challenges facing Mwanza Athletics Association, this event
has been a big boost in athletics in the Mwanza Region and the country
in general. We thank the sponsors for making this event a success in our
region. Without sponsors we can do nothing and we should not complain
that athletics in the country is not performing while it is one of the
isolated sports events,’ he said.
