The challenge was made by the Morogoro Urban Member of Parliament, Abdulaziz Abood, at the Jamhuri Stadium, during the official closing of the 2014 Union Netball League.
He said promoting the sport at the grassroots, especially at school level, will help turn around the ailing standard of the sport to its glorious past days.
Abood said the existence of the Union League demonstrates how Tanzanians respect and cherish the Union especially during this time when the country continues with the process to come up with a new constitution.
The MP also used the opportunity to urge CHANETA and CHANEZA leaders to give Morogoro one more chance to host the tournament next year and he will ensure that there are lots of improvements in comparison to this year.
“As a local MP, I will speak with other lawmakers in the region to make sure we continue to improve the facilities so that we can host the league here next year,” he added.
CHANETA Chairperson Anna Kibira said the league was a success despite numerous challenges, including lack of funding. She said all teams put their best in the league and congratulated the leaders for their support. “We didn’t have civil teams, all were from the army and they played very well.
The fact that they are all army teams is a challenge to us to make sure that we also develop other non-army sides to compete at the same level,” she said.
Meanwhile, JKT Mbweni have retained the Union Netball League title for the second consecutive year after defeating Mafunzo of Zanzibar 46-29 in the last match at the Jamhuri Stadium here on Tuesday.
The champions won all their seven games, bagging 14 points in the league which climaxed on Tuesday evening. They also managed to maintain their unbeaten record in the league which involved five teams from Mainland Tanzania and three from Zanzibar.
While JKT Mbweni defended their title, their colleagues from Zanzibar, JKU, grabbed the second spot in the league after emerging victorious 51-42 in their last game against JKT Ruvu to haul 12 points.
Uhamiaji settled in the third spot after collecting nine points following a slim 50-48 victory over Zanzibar’s Zimamoto, while Mafunzo fell into the fourth position.
Former champions Jeshi Stars, who nowadays have been falling apart, concluded their league campaign with a 43-35 victory over hosts Polisi Morogoro to finish fifth after completing the league with seven points.
JKT Ruvu, who lost to JKU, took the sixth position while Polisi Morogoro, who managed only two points, settled at the seventh position. Zimamoto, who lost all their seven games, finished the league glued at the bottom of the table without a point.
