TOC organises Club Games postmoterm
TOC secretary general Filbert Bayi |
TOC secretary general Filbert Bayi said in an interview yesterday
that the meeting has been organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
and International Cooperation which financed local athlete’s foreign
training camps prior to the Games.
He said those expected to attend the meeting are top officials from
Ministry For Information, Culture, Youth and Sports, National Council
(NSC), officials of national sports associations, coaches and athletes
who competed at the Scotland Games.
‘It will be like a postmortem of the Scotland Games, this meeting
was called by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International
Cooperation Bernard Membe whose presence has been confirmed, also the
Minister For Information, Culture, Youth and Sports will be available.
It will be a meeting where all issues concerning the team trip and
performance in Scotland will be discussed,’ he said.
In a surprise move, Bayi said he is still looking for funds to
facilitate the meeting that other sports stakeholders will also attend.
However, Bayi said sounded very confident to raise that money before the
date of the meeting.
He said the meeting will shape the future of Tanzania sports.
Team Tanzania returned empty handed from the Games represented by
athletes from boxing, runners, cyclists, judokas, table tennis, swimming
and wrestling. With the exception of cyclists, the rest attended
foreign camps organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and
International Cooperation under the sports diplomacy.
Athletics Tanzania (AT) secretary general Suleiman Nyambui who
traveled to Scotland as head coach of athletes confirmed to have
received the invitation from TOC on the meeting.
He said he has already prepared his report on the team’s
performance at the Games and his recommendations to improve athletics in
the country.
‘After leaving Scotland, there was a communication from Government
that all coaches who travelled with athletes at the Games should prepare
reports on performance and what should be done to improve in next
Games, I have already submitted my report to the team manager of
Tanzania team at,’ he said.
Cycling Association of Tanzania chairman Geoffrey Muhagama who was
also a Tanzania cycling coach at the games, said he is ready for the
meeting with the government.
‘I’m aware of the meeting and ready for it. I will advise the
government to consider giving all sports association’s annual subsidies
and also employ at least two sports marketers.
‘I believe if the government will reintroduce subsides to sports
associations, performance will improve as associations will be able to
organise many events which will be used to select athletes for
international events and sports markers duty will be to look for
companies to sponsor associations. Iam one of those people who strongly
believe that sports has potential to attract corporate sponsors only
that there are no qualified sports markers,’ he said.
Boxing Federation (BFT) secretary general Mashaka Makore confirmed
that he will attend the meeting and said he has prepared his
recommendations for improvement.
TOC chairman Rashid Gulam said winning medals at international
events like Olympic Games needs early preparations, he said some
countries already have started preparations for the Brazil 2016
edition.
‘Because our government has shown strong willingness to support
sports in the country, I think it’s time to start preparations for
future events,’ he said.
