Lady athlete excels in Italy

Tanzanian lady athlete Zakia Mrisho (pictured) won the Cremona Half Marathon staged in Italy having clocked 1.11.49 yesterday, her coach Zacharia Gwandu confirmed.

Gwandu said the event attracted top runners from Africa and other parts of the World and Mrisho beat Kenyan Viola Jelagat to the runners-up position for her 1.12.18 timing.

He said this is the first high quality competitive event for the athlete who was involved in a car accident that rendered her inactive several months ago; he described the results as good to the athlete and the country in general.

‘I’m happy with the results, of course the time recorded was not her best  but winning at such a big stage is encouraging  considering that last week she competed in France where she emerged fifth but now she has improved to number one, that is very good and I urge other Tanzanians to emulate her performance,’ he said.

Gwandu said the athlete is now based in Italy where her manager Gianni Demadonna is sourcing more events for her to maintain fitness before she appears in international events next year.

‘Mrisho is a national team player, I believe the international events she is competing will keep her fit for national duties and other events,’ he said.

The Arusha-based coach who has been training Mrisho since 1998 side the athlete is expected in the country in December.

The 30-year old Mrisho was selected for the Tanzania team to compete at this year’s Commonwealth Games in Scotland but failed to join the team due to injury. She   has represented the country at top international events, her first national assignment was in 2003 when she competed at the Monaco World Athletics finals and she finished sixth in 3,000 meters race.

She also represented the country at 2005 World Championships in Finland where she emerged number sixth in 5,000 meters; her last appearance at the Commonwealth Games was in Australia where she emerged eighth in 5,000 meters.
