Rock City Marathon entries surpass 2,500

More than 2,500 local and international athletes have confirmed to compete in the sixth edition of Rock City half marathon expected to be staged in Mwanza on Sunday.
 
Mathew Kasonta, event coordinator from Capital-Plus International (CPI), confirmed the statistics after arriving in Mwanza city yesterday to finalise preparations of the event which is expected to start and finish at CCM Kirumba Stadium.
 
He said apart from attracting prominent government officials within Lake Zone, many upcoming athletes and those who have been in the game for some time have registered for this year’s event, mentioning that the runners are from Tanzania and other countries including Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), India, Canada and United States.
 
Kasonta is optimistic that the number of participants will increase based on the past experience where many participants do register at eleventh hour.
 
‘We expect the number of athletes to increase this year, as we have greatly improved prize fund package and reshaped the activities for this year. We are also looking forward to have an increased number of foreign participants as contrasted to the previous editions,’ said Kasonta.
 
This year’s event will feature short races of 100, 400 and 1,500 metres, thanks to RCM technical committee who saw the significance of introducing the races which will include youths from secondary schools and those at upper primary schools.  The races which will be run after the main half marathon.
 
He unveiled cash prize packages for various categories as follows,  for 21 kilometer race (half marathon) a total of 7,100,000/- have been set aside for winners whereby 1.5 m/- will be for the grand winners in either sex, First runners-up will walk away with 900,000/- each and second runners-up will get 700,000/- each.
 
For five kilometers category race, more than 400,000/- has been set aside for winners. A sum of 340,000/- has been set aside for winners of the three-kilometre race and a total of 200,000/- is for the two-kilometre winners.
 
Kasonta said for the inaugural short distance race category a sum of 480,000/-, will be up for grabs while all grand winners will walk away with decoders as well.
 
The coordinator said registration forms are still available at the places stated earlier during the launch of the event.
