Athletics trio to train in Eldoret

International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF)
Three Tanzanian athletes, Fabian Sulle, Fabian Joseph and Bazil John, leave for Kenya today to take part in a one-year training camp at t Eldoret-based Kipchoge Keino Academy.

The camp, according to Tanzanian Olympic Committee (TOC) secretary general Filbert Bayi, is coordinated by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) for athletes from various parts of the world, who are competing in various distance races.

Bayi said it will be the second time for Tanzania to win the scholarships for its athletes at the academy. The country landed the scholarships for the first time ever in 1969, in which it sent three athletes.

The TOC official said Nelson, Joseph and John have signed contracts to attend training at the camp, noting that the trio will face expulsion from the camp should they entertain either absenteeism or indiscipline.

He disclosed that the country’s two other athletes, Dickson Marwa and Alphonce Simbu, have been left out of the camp following the failure by the IAAF to confirm the two athletes’ participation in races sanctioned by the world athletics governing body.

Bayi also said Tanzanian athletes that have missed out on the camp will continue training in the country whilst waiting for scholarships from the Olympic Solidarity.

Athletics Tanzania (AT) secretary general Suleiman Nyambui expressed sincere appreciation to TOC for assisting the national athletics governing body to request for the scholarships.
