Sports fraternity hails new minister Nape Nnauye

Newly appointed Minister Nape Nnauye
A cross-section of sports lovers in the country have hailed and asked the newly appointed minister of Information, Culture, Artists and Sports, Nape Nnauye, to reform the sector so that it becomes consistence with global trends.

Nnauye, the Member of Parliament of Mtama, was appointed yesterday by President John Pombe Magufuli in the new cabinet announced yesterday.

Commenting on his appointment, the National Sports Council (NSC) secretary, Henry Lihaya, hailed the appointment describing Nnauye as a hard worker .

“Honourable Nape Nnauye has proven to be a hard worker. It’s my hope that he will also work well at the ministry,” he said.
Tanzania Olympics Committee (TOC) secretary general Filbert Bayi asked the new minister to come up with sustainable plans which can develop the sector in the country and also plans to develop sports from the grassroots level.

He also asked the new minister to revise the annual primary and secondary school games (UMITASHUMTA and UMISETA) format so that talents spotted from the events are well nurtured.

Bayi said Tanzania has many talents but they are lost on the way due to lack of follow ups. He gave an example of talents sported at Copa Coca Cola and Airtel Raising Stars competitions.

“Firstly, let me congratulate Honourable Nape Nnauye on his new appointment. I welcome him to the sports family. To me his first job should be to put much emphasis on developmental teams because this is where the future of the country belongs. You see after the revival of the UMITASHUMTA and UMISETA several years ago, nothing is being done for identified athletes who are supposed to be nurtured and developed. He needs to do something there.

“We have also Copa Coca Cola and Airtel Raising Stars where talents are spotted but they are lost. The new minister should work on that to make sure that all talents are developed,” he said.

The Tanzania Boxing Federation (BFT) secretary general Makore Mashaga said sports fraternity in the country expects a lot from the new minister.

He said the new sports minister should capitalize on the momentum to reform the sports sector and also work with associations to prepare for next year’s Rio Olympics.

“It is the best appointment and I wish him (Nnauye) all the best in his new job. I think he will work with all the sports associations in the country to see how best sports can improve in the country,” he said.

The sports fans said one of the biggest challenges of the new minister is to make sports in the country be consistent with global trends and should do this because sports is not developing in the country .

They said the minister must reform the sector because sports has become big global business and a tool for national unity and economic development.

As the nation prepares for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil next summer, the new minister should work with national sports associations to prepare well for the Games.
