Unheraled Dar athlete sparkles in China races

Emanuel Giniki in one of his domestic victories
Tanzania long distance runner Emanuel Giniki beat a field of 18,000 competitors to win this year’s Kunming Plateau International half marathon held in China last Sunday.

Athletics Tanzania’s (AT) acting secretary general Ombeni Zavala confirmed the development yesterday. She said Giniki clocked one hour, four minutes and 2 seconds, beating the previous event’s record.

However, Zavala said the Kunming race was not a qualifying event for Rio Olympics and Giniki and his fellow countryman Nathalia Elsante will compete at this weekend’s Gyung Marathon which is an Olympic qualifier.

“Our two athletes are in China to seek Rio Olympics qualifications, we hope they will qualify, Giniki has just won the Kunming half Marathon which was held in China last week”, she said.

She also disclosed that Allophone Felix will compete at this year’s Lake Biwa Marathon in Japan.

The AT official said Felix who already qualified for the Rio Olympic Games will use the Japan Marathon as preparation for the Olympics.
The Lake Biwa Marathon which is 71 years old now and International Athletics Association (IAAF) Gold-labelled event, is considered as the oldest marathon held in Japan and it attracts elite athletes from around the World.

This year’s event has attracted some of the world best runners in the likes of Ethiopian Tadese Tola who holds a record of 2.04.49 at 2013 Dubai Marathon,  Kenyan Lucas Rotich who clocked 2.07.17 at 2015 Hamburg Marathon and Liam Adams of Australia who recorded 2.13.49 at 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
