I was unfortunate to go to school, "now I want to be an international athlete"
Upcoming athlete (Gidawame) receiving running gear from Eva Gidabuday (Director of GSTF), left is Faustin Baha Sulle (2000 Veracruz World Half Marathon Silver Medalist) who supervises the athlete |
Gidawame Gwai Magoma was born on 28/12/2000/ as the only child to his mother who died when he was still very young, the point that he does not remember her face. After his mother died, he was raised by his stepmother because his father had nine wives, including his deceased mother.
"I went through a very painful life in the hands of my stepmothers, I was denied my basic rights, I had to herd cows; even when it was time to start school, I was denied going to school while my other age mates were studying"
The act of being deprived of studying hurt him a lot, and when he was in the fields he moved the cows near the school so that he could hear his colleagues studying and he could learn. When the parents got the information, they punished him with flogging and made sure he didn't come near the school environment.
Along with being
denied to study; other things that
tormented him in his growing up include not getting the right to be taken to
the hospital when he got sick, most of the time he dealt with cattle in the
wild without getting help until he recovered without getting medicine or
treatment. "Sometimes when I am overwhelmed, I sleep in the forest until the
next day so I can walk home slowly"
When the suffering became too much out of desperation, he tried to commit suicide by drinking poison, luckily it could not cause serious harm as he recovered after being saved by a Good Samaritan. He was taken many kilometers to go from one house to another being treated as a house boy instead of a child, when he was late on the way he ended up being beaten badly.
he continued going through these difficulties until he reached the age of self-awareness, he realized that he has many talents in him, he started to love playing, the first sport he liked was throwing a spear (javelin) and running. He decided that since his biggest dream is to get an education through playing, he can get a chance to educate himself if he can get out of this oppressive environment.
With his personal
efforts, Gidawame has already won a Bronze
medal in 2019 and a Silver medal in
2020 in the National Athletics Javelin competition. He also knows how to
read and has a great ability to handle social networks where he continues to
learn.
After meeting the Arusha Coaches, Gidawame has already got training gear and has started official training where he has been advised that he will be good for the 1500m to 10000m track where the Coaches will continue to train him with dedication until he reaches his dreams.
