Canada's Lanni Marchant was 44th, with a time of 3:01:54, a season best. Saturday's opening amid near-empty stands left it to Usain Bolt to set the nine-day event alight Saturday night when he opens his campaign for three sprint gold medals. By that time, world-record holder Ashton Eaton will be halfway through the 10 events of the decathlon, seeking to add the world title to his Olympic gold. Muhammad Ali's Africa Tour and the 1980 Olympics

Image
In response to the Soviet Union invasion of Afghanistan in 1979, the United States decided to boycott the 1980 Olympics in Moscow. President Jimmy Carter decided to have Muhammad Ali go on a five nation tour to convince African leaders to also boycott the Olympics. Ali was against the Soviet Union’s actions in Afghanistan and he was a popular figure in Africa, so for Carter this move seemed pretty logical. The five nations that Ali would visit were Tanzania, Kenya, Nigeria, Liberia, and Senegal. The United States government was at the time more concerned about this invasion that they were with the apartheid regime in South Africa. The general consensus on this decision seems to be that this was a bad diplomatic move on Carter’s part. Some officials in Tanzania questioned why Muhammad Ali was sent on a diplomatic mission and one questioned if the United States would have sent Chris Evert to London to talk with the British. It also didn’t help matters that Ali was poo...

Usain Bolt And Mo Farah Could Race Each Other

Image
Any race between the two would probably be over 600m Two of the biggest names in world sport could go head-to-head after Bolt said he was prepared to face the Briton over 600m. One is the world's fastest man, the other is one of Britain's most successful athletes, and they could be going head-to-head in a race for charity. Speaking to Sky, UK athletics star Mo Farah challenged Jamaican Usain Bolt to run over a distance of between 600 metres and 800 metres. Farah, 30, is more used to competing over 5,000m and 10,000m, while Bolt specialises in the 100m and 200m. They won their respective events at last year's Olympics and struck up a special connection during the London Games.
