Usain Bolt and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce were named the 2013 Athletes of the Year, making it the first time a Jamaican duo has copped the prestigious title and only the third time in the history of the award. The only other athletes to have done this are Americans Carl Lewis and Florence Griffith-Joyner in 1988 and Colin Jackson and Sally Gunnell of Great Britain in 1993. This award, which was announced at the 2013 World Athletics Gala on Saturday in Monaco, is the fifth for Bolt and the first for Fraser-Pryce, making her the second Jamaican woman to receive the award after Merlene Ottey in 1990. GLASGOW SCOTLAND/The site of 2014 Commonwealth Games Games bosses revealed plans for “live zones” in the city where people can experience the Games without holding a ticket. Screens on Glasgow Green and in Merchant City will show the opening and closing ceremonies and the major events. At these and other locations families can play sports and games and enjoy music, theatre and comedy as part of the 2014 Games cultural programme. The bandstand at Kelvingrove Park, currently being refurbished, is one of the sites earmarked for activities. The zones will run throughout the Games from July 23 to August 3 next year. Nangwa Village located at the bottom of Mt Hanang, the 3rd tallest mountain in Tanzania is my proud home village. I ones dreamed of pulling efforts to set up a training center as a symbol of my solidarity, but could not get a hand from local government leaders to clear the way accordingly. This is how it would look and it would have produced future champions! Unfortunately present local government leaders don't see the future, 'we will pray that the time passes on quickly enough for them to end their terms so that the new futuristic machines can take charge as leaders of tomorrow! Sports Spirit "Do Die" Joy Johnson, 86, the oldest woman to complete the New York City Marathon on Sunday, often said she wanted to die running. She lived only one day past the race. Johnson, of San Jose, Calif., had stumbled and hit her head on the road around the 20th mile, said her sister, Faith Anderson, 83, who accompanied Johnson to New York. Medics wanted to take Johnson to the hospital, but she insisted on continuing the race, Anderson said. Johnson finished in about eight hours, compared with less than five hours in the early 1990s, when she was at the peak of her marathon running. On Monday morning, after the two sisters returned from their annual post-marathon visit to the “Today” show crowd at Rockefeller Center, Johnson said she was tired and lay down on her bed at the Roosevelt Hotel in Manhattan.
