Dar Marathon hits another milestone, locals impress

Dickson Marwa /The winner The Rotary Dar Marathon took place on Tuesday and once again it hit a milestone after realising about Sh500 million meant to support education. The funds raised, according to organisers, will be used to complete a world-class entrepreneurial resource centre at the University of Dar es Salaam under ‘Empowering Leaders through Education’ theme. Organised by Rotary Clubs in Dar es Salaam in association with Bank M, the race attracted over 10,000 competitors from different parts of the world, thus making it the biggest marathon event in Tanzania. World record holders and past champions highlighted the half marathon. The runners came from Kenya, Rwanda, Malawi, the Tanzanian military, Police and the elite up-country runners. In this year’s edition, the men’s 21.1kilometre race winner was Dickson Marwa who clocked 1:02:41 hours followed by Ismail Juma (1:02:42) and Fabian Joseph (1:02:45). Swimming coaches attend course in US

Eight Tanzanian swimming coaches are in Florida attending ten-day training courtesy of American Swimming Coaches’ Association (ASCA).   Tanzania Swimming Coaches Association (TSCA) secretary general Amina Mfaume, who spoke from US, said the coaches left the country last Friday and they are currently in Florida.   She said the training is going on very well and they are learning a lot that will help them to develop the game once they come back home.   Mfaume thanked the ASCA for the training opportunity saying it will help to improve swimming standards in the country, saying the game in the USA is a serious one.   "We are here on ten days training. The days we have been here we have learnt a lot of things, including swimmers nutrition and health. We have also visited some of their swimming facilities. Kenyans Eliud Kipchoge And Rita Jeptoo Win 2014 Chicago Marathon

Rita Jeptoo won 2014 Chicago Marathon in the women category making it the Kenyan day in Chicago CHICAGO (AP) -- Kenyans ruled the Chicago Marathon on Sunday, with Eliud Kipchoge leading a 1-2-3 men's sweep and compatriot Rita Jeptoo repeating as the women's winner. Kipchoge pulled away over the last two miles for his first major marathon victory, finishing in 2 hours, 4 minutes, 11 seconds. He was followed by Sammy Kitwara in 2:04:28 and Dickson Chumba in 2:04:32. Jeptoo was timed in 2:24:35 in winning her fourth straight major marathon. She also captured the 2013-14 World Marathon Majors points championship and took the Boston Marathon in April. Mare Dibaba of Ethiopia (2:25:37) was second and Florence Kiplagat of Kenya (2:25:57) was third. The winners earned $100,000. Jeptoo receives an extra $500,000 for winning the series championship. Kijitonyama Open JR Tennis Tournament to kick off tomorrow

Kijitonyama Open JR Tournament will be held at TTCL grounds More than Sixty (60) kids from all over the the country will gather together at the TTCL grounds in Dar es Salaam for a two day tennis open match. Among those who have confirmed to participate include AICC Club from Arusha,  Morogoro Gymkhana Club, Dar es Salaam’s Bahari Beach Club, Mkuranga Club fro Coast Region, Dar es Salaam Gymkhana Club and the host Kijitonyama Club. The Kijitonyama Tennis Academy organizing committee are happy to welcome all Dar es Salaam resident to attend, to watch and have fun during the two days tennis event.

Dar Rotary Marathon attracts 10,000 entries

The Rotary Dar half Marathon 2014 hosted by the six clubs in Dar es Salaam in partnership with Bank M is on track for its biggest year yet. Entries are expected to surpass last year’s figures and Rotarians are looking forward to welcoming more runners and walkers than ever before.   Former President of the United Republic of Tanzania Mzee Ali Hassan Mwinyi will once again flag off the marathon and walk the nine kilometre to empower future leaders through education, in which funds are being raised to refurbish the 400 square metre state of the art Entrepreneurship Resource Center at the University of Dar es Salaam by providing a 85 thin client computer network with all software and support disability access.   The event is to take place on Tuesday October 14   (Nyerere Day) at the Green on Kenyatta ...

The race to be held on Nyerere Day will feature over 1000 runners from Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, Malawi and hosts Tanzania, according to the event’s organizing committee chairman, Vikash Shah. “We are very happy that a number of top athletes have confirmed their participation in this year’s Dar Rotary Marathon,” said Shah.
