John Stephen Akhwari Athletics legend John Stephen Akhwari has declared that Tanzania is not in a position to get a medal in the on going Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.   Akhwari, who hails from Manyara, has been a symbol for the Olympic Movement after he hit the headlines in the Mexico City Games in 1968 after suffering injury and hobbled with pain, finishing last in the marathon, well after most people had left the stadium but a few spectators and some cameramen.   Akhwari said in an interview at his Manyara home that none of the athletes is in a position to win a medal as the athletes representing the country at the Glasgow Games were not drilled enough by Athletes Tanzania (AT) for the competition.   He said that for an athlete to get a medal in major competitions such as the Olympics and Commonwealth Games, such athlete has to be prepared thoroughly from grassroots to upper levels.    “It’s surprising that AT stage

Wales secured their first medal of the Commonwealth Games with silver in the rhythmic gymnastics team all-around final.  The Welsh team of Frankie Jones, Laura Halford and Nikara Jenkins led for much of the competition but Canada secured gold.  The silver medal means Jones is the most successful Welsh gymnast in Commonwealth Games history. The news is a major blow to the Games, coming the morning after they launched the event with a spectacular opening ceremony at Celtic Park. Team England said Farah, 31, would remain at his training base in Font Romeu, rather than travel to Glasgow where he was due to compete in the 5,000m and 10,000m. Farah had pulled out of his last two races – the Sainsbury’s Glasgow Grand Prix at Hampden Park and last Sunday’s Anniversary Games in London – after being admitted to hospital in the US with abdominal pains. Farah said: “I have taken the tough decision to withdraw from the Commonwealth Games. The sickness I had two weeks ago was a big setback for me. Ahmedi Saidi Magogo apata pigo mapema Ahmedi Saidi Magogo of Tanzania has been disqualified from the men's -60kg class at the Commonwealth Games after coming in overweight for the event. The Tanzanian was the only member of a 16-man list to fail to make the weight, with officials weighing him at 62.7kg when the judokas reported for registration. Magogo was nearly unable to attend the Games due to issues with his visa, but he was finally cleared to travel to Scotland with the rest of the squad. Glasgow, the host city for the XX Commonwealth Games, has been named as one of the world’s top 10 sporting cities at the prestigious SportBusiness Ultimate Sports City 2012 Awards.
