Amos upstages Rudisha in Glasgow

With an explosive final burst, Botswana's Nijel Amos has proven Commonwealth Games gold isn't a given even for true sporting royalty. Amos produced the upset of the Glasgow Games so far as he turned the tables on Kenyan track legend David Rudisha in Thursday's 800m final. World record holder and Olympic champion Rudisha, one of the world's most dominant track athletes in recent years, turned for home in front on a rain-sodden track at Hampden Park. But the 25-year-old's 2013 injury woes caught up with him over the last 100m as as Olympic silver medallist Amos stormed home to claim victory in one minute and 45.18 seconds. Makore Mashaga / BFT General Secretary THE Boxing Federation of Tanzania (BFT) is waiting for a report from the team that represented the country at the 20th commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland to determine the cause of the lackadaisical performance. BFT Secretary General Makore, Mashaga told the 'Daily News' yesterday their team will need to give an in-depth explanation over the disappointing results in Scotland. "I can't state why they performed that way, but we need a technical report when they get back, to know the reasons behind the poor performance in Glasgow," he said. Makore noted that they expected good results from the boxers as they were well prepared and the country invested a lot in the team. "Surely, I had great expectations on the boxing team. Tennis prodigy wins one year scholarship

Tanzania tennis prodigy Omar Sulle has won a one year International Tennis Federation’s scholarship tenable at Confederation of African Tennis (ITF /CAT) center based in Casablanca, the Tanzania Tennis Association (TTA) president Fina Mango confirmed yesterday.   Mango said Sulle becomes the first Tanzanian to won a scholarship at the newly opened center. Jamaica and Kenya had a night to remember on the third day of the Commonwealth Games athletics program, the track-and-field powerhouses reaping a big haul of medals, while Canada also nabbed two golds. Stephanie McPherson led an impressive Jamaican sweep of a high-quality women's 400m, while there were also golds for Andrew Riley in the 110m hurdles and Kimberly Williams in the triple jump. Not to be outdone, Joyce Chepkirui led a Kenyan one, two, three of a slow-paced 10,000m. Chepkirui led home Florence Kiplagat and Emily Chebet in 32:09.35 after a powerful surge 50 metres from the line. The Kenyan trio was in complete control of the race from the off and waited until the field had strung out and the bell sounded for the final lap before making any moves. It was Kiplagat who led the threesome into last 400 metres. At 200 metres she bolted, but Chepkirui responded on the inside and nipped her by 0.07 of a second. "It was so close near
