Miss Tanzania refutes Sitti’s age cheating claims

Photo by:Texas Department of Motor Vehicle  The organizers of Miss Tanzania beauty pageant, Lino International Agency played down the allegations of age cheating facing the recent crowned Sitti Mtemvu, insisting that she is still being regarded as eventual winner unless proved otherwise. There was concern over Mtemvu’s winning of the prestigious title, alleged that she was over aged and not below 24 years as per Miss Tanzania’s participation regulations. The controversy led to the leakage of some documents, which despite showing that she was over aged, the organizers said that they do not give weight to such mere allegations unless concrete evidence is given. Speaking in Dar es Salaam yesterday, Lino International Agency managing director, Hashim Lundenga said that for that reason, Mtemvu is still the winner of 2014 Miss Tanzania and as such, still wears the crown. Rock City Marathon entries surpass 2,500

More than 2,500 local and international athletes have confirmed to compete in the sixth edition of Rock City half marathon expected to be staged in Mwanza on Sunday.   Mathew Kasonta, event coordinator from Capital-Plus International (CPI), confirmed the statistics after arriving in Mwanza city yesterday to finalise preparations of the event which is expected to start and finish at CCM Kirumba Stadium.   He said apart from attracting prominent government officials within Lake Zone, many upcoming athletes and those who have been in the game for some time have registered for this year’s event, mentioning that the runners are from Tanzania and other countries including Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), India, Canada and United States.   Kasonta is optimistic that the number of participants will increase based on the past experience where many participants do register at eleventh hour.   ‘We expect the num...

Lady athlete excels in Italy

Tanzanian lady athlete Zakia Mrisho (pictured) won the Cremona Half Marathon staged in Italy having clocked 1.11.49 yesterday, her coach Zacharia Gwandu confirmed.   Gwandu said the event attracted top runners from Africa and other parts of the World and Mrisho beat Kenyan Viola Jelagat to the runners-up position for her 1.12.18 timing.   He said this is the first high quality competitive event for the athlete who was involved in a car accident that rendered her inactive several months ago; he described the results as good to the athlete and the country in general.   ‘I’m happy with the results, of course the time recorded was not her best  but winning at such a big stage is encouraging  considering that last week she competed in France where she emerged fifth but now she has improved to number one, that is very good and I urge other Tanzanians to emulate her performance,’ he said.   Gwandu said the athlete is now based in Ita...

Dar Marathon hits another milestone, locals impress

Dickson Marwa /The winner The Rotary Dar Marathon took place on Tuesday and once again it hit a milestone after realising about Sh500 million meant to support education. The funds raised, according to organisers, will be used to complete a world-class entrepreneurial resource centre at the University of Dar es Salaam under ‘Empowering Leaders through Education’ theme. Organised by Rotary Clubs in Dar es Salaam in association with Bank M, the race attracted over 10,000 competitors from different parts of the world, thus making it the biggest marathon event in Tanzania. World record holders and past champions highlighted the half marathon. The runners came from Kenya, Rwanda, Malawi, the Tanzanian military, Police and the elite up-country runners. In this year’s edition, the men’s 21.1kilometre race winner was Dickson Marwa who clocked 1:02:41 hours followed by Ismail Juma (1:02:42) and Fabian Joseph (1:02:45). Swimming coaches attend course in US

Eight Tanzanian swimming coaches are in Florida attending ten-day training courtesy of American Swimming Coaches’ Association (ASCA).   Tanzania Swimming Coaches Association (TSCA) secretary general Amina Mfaume, who spoke from US, said the coaches left the country last Friday and they are currently in Florida.   She said the training is going on very well and they are learning a lot that will help them to develop the game once they come back home.   Mfaume thanked the ASCA for the training opportunity saying it will help to improve swimming standards in the country, saying the game in the USA is a serious one.   "We are here on ten days training. The days we have been here we have learnt a lot of things, including swimmers nutrition and health. We have also visited some of their swimming facilities. Rita Jeptoo won 2014 Chicago Marathon in the women category making it the Kenyan day in Chicago CHICAGO (AP) -- Kenyans ruled the Chicago Marathon on Sunday, with Eliud Kipchoge leading a 1-2-3 men's sweep and compatriot Rita Jeptoo repeating as the women's winner. Kipchoge pulled away over the last two miles for his first major marathon victory, finishing in 2 hours, 4 minutes, 11 seconds. He was followed by Sammy Kitwara in 2:04:28 and Dickson Chumba in 2:04:32. Jeptoo was timed in 2:24:35 in winning her fourth straight major marathon. She also captured the 2013-14 World Marathon Majors points championship and took the Boston Marathon in April. Mare Dibaba of Ethiopia (2:25:37) was second and Florence Kiplagat of Kenya (2:25:57) was third. The winners earned $100,000. Jeptoo receives an extra $500,000 for winning the series championship.
