AT president attending IAAF Diamond League

AT President Anthony Mtaka Athletics Tanzania (AT) president Anthony Mtaka is attending a mid-year International Associations of Athletics Federation (IAAF) meeting in Doha. Mtaka who spoke from Doha yesterday,  said he has been invited by Qatar Athletics Federation to watch the ongoing Diamond League, but will use the opportunity to attend the   IAAF meeting as well. He declined to unveil the meeting’s agenda and only said he is closely following progress of the Diamond League. Athletics trio to train in Eldoret

International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) Three Tanzanian athletes, Fabian Sulle, Fabian Joseph and Bazil John, leave for Kenya today to take part in a one-year training camp at t Eldoret-based Kipchoge Keino Academy.   The camp, according to Tanzanian Olympic Committee (TOC) secretary general Filbert Bayi, is coordinated by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) for athletes from various parts of the world, who are competing in various distance races.   Bayi said it will be the second time for Tanzania to win the scholarships for its athletes at the academy. The country landed the scholarships for the first time ever in 1969, in which it sent three athletes.   The TOC official said Nelson, Joseph and John have signed contracts to attend training at the camp, noting that the trio will face expulsion from the camp should they entertain either absenteeism or indiscipline.   ...

AT keen on Rio Olympics prep

Wilhelm Gidabuday/File Photo Athletics Tanzania (AT) has come into agreement with Hanang Sports Club to promote athletics ahead of next year’s Brazil Olympics. Both AT president Anthony Mtaka and Hanang Sports Club founder Wilhelm  Gidabuday confirmed the deal which is expected to step up preparations of athletes for the Olympics. In an interview Mtaka said under the pact the two organisations will work together in soliciting and raising funds to enable athletes’ preparations. “This has been reached to complement our ever growing sponsorship challenges. Doors are open to companies, individuals and organisations to join in sponsorship while hoping in turn to win medals and improve athletes’ performance”, he said. HOLILI: Athletics duo to compete in South Afica

Holili Youth Club (HAYC) athletics duo of Paschal Mombo and Deo Lazaro are expected to board a flight to Johannesburg next week to compete in the Nedbank championships. HAYC founder Domitian Genand said the duo will leave the country on Friday next week and stay in South Africa up to September where they will also be attending trainings with Nedbank Athletics Club and  competitions. He said the duo will compete at various competitions and Mombo will first compete in 25 kilometre race on April 28 in Pretoria while Lazaro will compete in another event in May at a date to be announced later.  “We are in the process of building up a strong working relationship with the Nedbank Athletics Club of South Africa, as you know two of our athletes are there competing next and the other two athletes will travel to South Africa where they will stay up to September, it’s a good development as they will be training at the same time competing in various events”, he...

Azam FC coach Joseph Omog Azam FC coach Joseph Omog has declared that his team had plenty of leakages in the defence line, resulting in easy scoring of goals by opponents. In an interview with the Guardian the coach said that due to the signing of new defender Serge Pascal Wawa from Ivory Coast it needs time for other defenders to be able to play with him. Omog said so after his team was thrown out in ongoing Mapinduzi Cup by Mtibwa Sugar in the quarter final on Thursday.  Three central defenders Said Morad, Aggrey Moris and David Mwatika were trying to cope with the new defender and that is what cost the team. “We are still looking for someone who will play with Wawa in central defending. National cross-country championship on Feb

The National Cross-Country Championship is expected to take place in Arusha on February 15, Athletics Tanzania (AT) has announced. The association’s secretary general, Suleiman Nyambui, confirmed that the tournament will involve all athletes from Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar with the aim of forming the national team that will participate in an international meet in Switzerland in March. “The event aims at selecting a strong national team that will represent the country in the international competition in Switzerland in March,” he said.  “It also gears towards promoting athletics so it can attract the attention of sports enthusiasts in the country.” Nyambui insisted all athletes should participate in the event so AT can have greater opportunity to select talented athletes from across the country. “With strong determination, hard work, passion and commitment we can make great strides in the sport and turn our athletes into outstanding performers in th...
